Yellow Flower Tutorial and a Give Away

Today I have created some new flowers using some of the Punch Bunch flower punches I have used before, but also two new ones I haven't used.  I love how you can create so many different types of flowers with punches.  I thought I would play a little game today and let you tell me what type of flower you think this might be.  There is no wrong answer.  I will be selecting someone from all the comments on this blog post to receive the two new punches I have not used before.  I selected these punches in hopes you don't already have them, and would like to add them to your collection.  These punches are from Joan's Gardens.

Here are all the supplies used on this card:  The design paper is from the Kaiser Craft "Lilac Avenue Collection;  The doily under the flower is the new MFT "Dizzy Doily"; on top of that is the Memory Box "Valerian Flourish" (98196); topped with the Memory Box "Quinn Flourish" (98267).  The border along the bottom is from the new Spellbinders "Moroccan Accents" (S5-064) die set.  The sentiment is from the JustRite "Always & Forever Medallion Labels" stamp set.  The corners are from the Cheery Lynn "Lace Corner Deco B" (B162) die set.

To create the flowers I used the punches shown in this picture.  In the top row is the Punch Bunch "Small Heart".  You need to punch four of them for each flower and cut down the center as shown in the picture.  The next two rows show the Punch Bunch "Small Tear Drop".  You will need 16 of these.  At the end of these rows you can see the "Medium Daisy" which is used for a "base".  Eight petals will be glued to each Med. Daisy Base.   The two bottom rows show the "Martha Stewart "Cosmos" which is used for the base and two rows of the Punch Bunch "Small Pears".  Eight pears are glued to each "Cosmos" base.  In the upper right corner, there are 3 "Small Daisies" which will become of the center of the flower.  All the flower petals were shaped using the tools from the Flower tool kit before assembly.  To assemble the flowers you will be starting with the two layers of the "Pears" for the bottom.  Next layer on top of the pears will be two layers of the "Tear Drop".  You will add the layer created with the divided heart petals next and end with three small daisies glued together for the very center.

In this picture you can see the petals glued to the base for each of the groups. The above picture doesn't show all the rows for one flower but you can see how the petals were glued to the base then they were shaped by pressing down into the black shaping mat to "cup" them.  At the top of the picture is the flower assembled.

Would you like a chance to win these two punches, shown above, to add to your collection (these are the Small Tear Drop and Small Heart" Punches).  Just leave me a comment below and tell me what type of flower you think I created today.  There is no wrong answer.  I will do a random drawing next Monday, April 16, to announce the winner.  The winner will need to contact Joan at Joan's Gardens to leave your name and address and she will mail you your prize.   I hope you will join in on the fun.

It is the time of year when everyone likes to start working on creating flowers.  Joan's Gardens is having a 40% off sale on Punch Bunch punches.  Be sure to go over to her blog to check it out.

As you know, all the products I use can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Have a great weekend.

Hi, Selma. These flowers kind of remind me of zinnias. I used to help my grandmother plant the seeds to grow them when I was a child. Your cards are just gorgeous. I told Joan they need to be put on display, maybe in a shadow box or something. I just ordered and received the flower kit from Joan this week and am going to give "flower making" a try. Thank you for your inspiration. Debi

How can we put a name on something THAT Beautiful. My 1st thought was that it reminded me of buttercups but since those are single petals I'm thinking it's simply the whole garden rolled into one beautiful blossom ... It doesn't get any better than this Miss Selma.... LOVE your work & your daily inspirations.

Hi Selma, Love your cards, so very talented. I think it may be a camelia. Hope the weather is warming up for you over there, as I live in sunny Queensland Australia. Our winter is coming up, but even then it's nothing like yours. Keep up the good work. I have bought a lot of dies since I found your website & I think I'm addicted to them. ( I guess Joan doesn't mind though) Regards Gwen Knowles.

I have to say these beauties are "Marigolds"- of course they could be any of the many but because of the leaves I go with "Marigolds". I bow to the Flower Queen!! Your flowers are always so amazing!! You're so nice to post the tutorials and share your skills with us!! These flowers are just gorgeous and several types came to my mind even before I read your write-up...lol... they look like either like dahlias just opening or even camellias, but I've never seen yellow camellias... is such a color for camellias? Then after reading the write-up, I thought they looked like old-fashioned prim roses. That is the beauty of paper crafting... it let's our creations be whatever our imagination can create!!

Hi Selma, I just loved your card that you made today and love the color yellow you used. The flower you made I think might be a Marigold. I just love making flower like you and have a wonderful time making them. Have a great and wonderful day.

Good morning, Selma ...

I hope I'm not too late, because I saved your card to view again and again, like dessert after a very full meal, to be savored. I LOVE your work and am always so inspired.

I ADORE using my Punch Bunch punches to make flowers and NO, I don't yet have those two charmers you feature in your giveaway. I would love to add them to my drawerful to make new and beautiful flowers like you!

As to what kind of flower -- my best guess is zinnia. I don't really know a lot of flower names, most of mine I label "Amaranth," which I learned about in high school (too many years ago!!!). Then, I was in the craze of kids wanting to change their birth names to something more "hip" (hippie age!!), and I saw in the dictionary that Amaranth means "an imaginary flower said never to fade." Wouldn't that just be perfect then for a line-up of paper flowers, created with joy and imagination, piecing together tears and hearts and "I love you, I love you not petals" to make flowers filled with emotions on a card?

Thank you for sharing!

Fondly,
Ellen ♥ CardMonkey
