Pansy Tutorial

I promised to post a tutorial for creating a pansy and the tutorial is below.  First I will explain this card before doing the tutorial.  This is a 5.5" x 6" card.  On the corners I added the Joy! Crafts corners.  In the center I used the Spellbinders "Marvelous Squares". In the points of the largest (bottom) layer of the Marvelous Squares, I added the die cut corners which also come with this set.  The pretty piece in the center of the square is the new Marianne Design "Anja Fan" (LR0265).  The pretty "Leaves" are from the Marianne Design "Anja Leaves" set.  The pansy is created with the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #2" dies.

These are the two Build A Flower die sets used.  

If you look at the dies above, I used two of the "yellow" petals and four of the orange petals to create this pansy.   The flower base is the largest green five-point one on the embellishment set.

The petals were die cut using yellow card stock then the edges sponged with "Wild Honey" Distress Ink. I used the "Aged Mahogany" Distress Marker to draw the lines in on four of the (orange on die plate) petals.  The petals were then shaped with the tools from the Flower Tool Kit to give them dimension.  I used the large white tool to give them the rounded look and used my fingernails to kind of "crunch" up the very ends of the petals for a "ruffle" look.

 

Start by gluing down the two top petals on the base, slightly over lapping them in the middle.  Next add two petals to side (one on each side).

For the petals in the very front, on the bottom, I glued the last two petals together down the side, over lapping as shown, to create one wide petal.  These were then glued on the bottom of the flower, with the edges over the petals on the side.

In the very center of the pansy I added these two pieces from the Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #1 Embellishments.  I color the larger piece with the Aged Mahogany Distress Marker on the lower half to blend in with the lines on the lower half of the flower.  The smaller piece was glued on top of it.  

Pansies come in many, many different colors and color combinations.  You can have a lot of fun coming up with your own beautiful, colorful pansies.

Build A Flower Carnation Tutorial

I have two request for tutorials using the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #2 dies.  The first request was to do a tutorial on how to create a Carnation with the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #2" dies and the second request was for a Red Poppy.  I will be posting that tutorial tomorrow.    

In the above picture you can see two finished carnations created with the Cheery Lynn BAF #2 dies.

To create the carnation I used the pink petals shown on this BAF #2 die.

The carnation has many very ruffled layers. The yellow carnation above was completed using four layers and the red carnation was completed using five layers. There is no right or wrong - it just depends on the look that is pleasing to you.  I used the eight point base from the BAF #1 embellishment to build each layer; you can see it on the right side of the picture above. The eight petals above shows the first two petals as they look after being die cut.  The second two, on the top row, shows them after they were shaped with the white tool from the Tool Kit to soften the fibers in the card stock.  On the bottom row, you can see how I shaped the petals to give them the ruffled look of a carnation petal.  To shape them I just used my fingernails to kind of accordion pleat each one.  Do this to all the petals.  You will  have 8 petals for each row you want for your flower. 

 To assemble, start assembling the first layer by attaching four of the petals on every other point of the 8 point base.  I use the "Crafter's Pick" white glue because it is thick and holds well.  I find it easiest to put some glue on the Teflon Craft Mat and then just dip the tip of the petal in the glue.  

Next you add the other four petals to complete that layer.

 Create as many layers as you want for your flower.  Each row gets smaller as you work toward the center.  You start overlapping the tips as you glue them on the base, which will overlap the petals which makes the petals look fuller.  As you get to the center layers, you want to start pinching them up to make a closed center.  You can see the difference in the picture above as I glue the petals closer and closer for each row.  No two flowers are going to look exactly alike, so don't worry if they don't look exactly like mine.  When you start stacking the layers, you can start shaping your flower, pinching them up for very close layers.

This picture shows the first two layers glued together.  Try to alternate the petals, on each layer, so they are not stacked up in a row.  Continue to glue in each layer.

When you get all the layers glued together, your flower will look like this. Isn't it amazing how you can take card stock and create such realistic flowers.  The nice part is that it is very easy and so much fun.  I know someone is going to ask about the stem so I better tell you.  I used a skewer and wrapped floral tape around it.  The leaves were die cut using the green leaves on the left size of the BAF #2 die, shown above.

Build A Flower Magnolia Tutorial

As I promised yesterday, I have another tutorial for you using the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #3" dies.   This is a magnolia I created using the largest "Pear" shaped petal for the flower and the  largest "Sun" shape from the Build A Flower #2 Embellishments" die.   The flower petals were die cut using white card stock then light gray ink was sponged on the edges of each petal and down in the center (pointed end).  The petals were shaped with the tools from the Flower Tool Kit on the black shaping mat.  Two rows were made using the "Base" pieces from the BAF #1 Embellishment dies then layered.  For the center of the flower, I die cut a bunch of the largest "Sun" shape and cupped each one with the largest stylus; there are probably 8 to 10 suns.  Glue (Crafter's Pick) was spread on the top of each sun and they were layered and cupped up into a cone shape.  You need to add glue to the whole top of each one so they will stick together.   On the very bottom row, I used a maroon marker to add some color to the tips of each point on the "sun" and glued it around the bottom.  The leaves are from an older Heartfelt Creations stamp set.

To create a card for this pretty flower, I used the eBosser "Dainty Dots" embossing folder for the background.   My favorite embossing/die cutting machine is the "eBosser" and the embossing folders for this machine come in 8 1/2" x 11" size.  I cut the sheet down to fit my card.  A piece of gray card stock was added to the top and the new Spellbinders "Flourish Trim" was attached. I use "Glue N Seal" to glue down intricate dies like this.   The pretty die cut behind the magnolia is from the Heartfelt Creations "Timeless Amour" die set.   Along the bottom I added the Cheery Lynn "Anastasia Border".

Build A Flower #3 Card & Tutorial

This weekend I have been working on creating flowers with the Cheery Lynn (BAF) Build A Flower #3 dies.  This picture shows all the different flowers that I created.   

Here are some of the flowers you can create with petals from this die:  lily, magnolia, rose, pine cones, gardenia, anemone, violet, tulip, camellia, dogwood, zinnia, aster, tulip, marigold, cosmos, and bachelor button.  You probably can think of even more varieties.  You can combine some of these petals with petals from BAF#1 and #2 for even more varieties of flowers. Sometimes just using different stamens from the three different BAF Embellishments will produce different types of flowers. I like to look at different flowers in books or on the Internet to get ideas of which petals and embellishments to use.  I have completed many tutorials on ways to complete a lot of these flowers (look under tutorials in my side bar).  You can also get great instructions by purchasing "The Paper Bouquet Book" by Susan Tierney-Cockburn.  And as I have always stated, I feel it is a must to have the proper tools for shaping/creating flowers; I always use the "Flower Tool Kit, the "black embossing pad".  The glue I use is "Crafter's Pick".

The background design paper is from the Kaiser Craft "The Lake House" paper pad.  The white frame is one of the Spellbinders "Romantic Rectangles". The piece in the center of this frame was stamped with the JustRite "Lattice Background" stamp.   The sentiment from the JustRite "Faith" stamp set was stamped in the center of the Spellbinders Parisian Accents" die cut.  It was sponged with Distress Ink prior to taking it out of the die.  Green Kaiser Craft Pearls were added to complete the card.

This is a close up of the Star Gazer Lily.  I die cut six of the lily petals and colored them with "Gelatos" which are pigment sticks.  This pigment glides on creamy, vibrant color, and blends beautifully with or without water.  I used a marker to add the dots.  Small dots of glue was added near the center of the petals and "Bright Pink" Flower Soft was added.  When you look closely at the petals on the Star Gazer, you can see little "fuzzies" and the Flower Soft worked great for that added detail. I used the BAF #1 embellishments for the stamen.  A marker was used to add a darker color to the tips of each "leg" of this piece.  A small dot of glue was added to both the front and back of the tip then it was dipped in "Ultra Fine Toffee" Flower Soft.  You must use the "ultra fine" Flower soft to get the right texture.  Under the stamen I added the five point base from the BAF #2 Embellishments.  The lily leaves are also in the BAF#2 Embellishment dies.

Daisy Die Tutorial

 The other day I posted a tutorial on how to create a "Lazy Daisy" using the new Cheery Lynn "Daisy Strip"dies.  Here is the link to that card. Today I thought I would show you another way to create a different, pretty flower using these same dies.  Before I do the tutorial, I will tell you about this card.

For the background I used a piece of the Memory Box "Brioche" 6x6 design paper.  The white frame is the new Memory Box "Honey Blossom Frame" lined with the Memory Box "Debutante Frame" that was embossed with the eBosser "Dainty Dots" embossing folder.   The little tag in the lower right side is the smallest of the Spellbinders "Labels 20" dies. In the center is stamped "Hello" from the JustRite "Seeds of Summer" stamp set.  The pretty butterfly is new from Memory Box and was created by layering the "Pippi and Isabella Butterflies.   The white leaves are from the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #2 Embellishments".

The Cheery Lynn "Daisy Strip" has two each of three sizes of daisies.  I used all three sizes for each flower.  There are four layers of each size in one flower - a total of 12 layers.  To give the flower some "contrast" in color, I used two shades of pink card stock - alternating the colors.  Each petal was shaped by using the self-closing tweezers from the Flower Tool Kit.  The tweezers were placed on the tip and I used my fingers to pinch in the petal.  I did lightly mist the flowers using the "Mister" by Ranger which sprays a very thin mist and does not get the card stock overly wet.   The card stock needs to be just moist to hold the shape.   

After all the petals on each "daisy" were shaped, I layered first a dark pink, then a light pink, using two dark and two light pink flowers, creating four layers of each size.  The four largest were place on the bottom, then the middle size stacked on top.  The layer of the smallest flowers was pinched up to create a closed center.  All these layers created a very pretty, dimensional flower.    

You can see how realistic this flower looks in this picture.  Don't you love that you can use your flower dies to create so many different types of flowers.  I haven't even used this die yet for just a regular daisy.  I wonder what else I can come up with this set of dies!

Lazy Daisy Tutorial

I love daisies- don't you. I want to show you a different way of using them.  There are three different sizes of daisies on this strip.  I used the largest  flowers for this card.  Rather than using them just as die cut, I decided to create a "lazy" daisy.   Before I do the tutorial, I will tell you about the other parts of the card.  

The background design paper is from the Kaiser Craft "Lullaby Collection" paper pad.  This is a 5.5" x 6" card.   The frame I used is the Cheery Lynn "Lattice #2" Frame Die.   In the center of this frame I added the Spellbinders Picot Edge Circle die cut with blue card stock.  The beautiful corners are the new Joy! Crafts (0135) corners.  I love how well they coordinate with the Lattice frame.  The flowers were attached the center of the Spellbinders Circle with dimensional glue dots placed right under the yellow part of the flower. The stems and leaves were then added under the flowers.  The butterfly is the new Memory Box "Pippi" and Isabella" butterfly.  I love this smaller size butterfly.  A small gingham  bow and Kaiser Craft Pearls were added to complete the card.

I wanted to tell you if you run the Pippi Butterfly through your machine with the embossing pad, it really gives it a pretty rounded edge.  As you know I use the eBosser machine.  The embossing pad for this machine is much thinner than the pads for other machines.  I really didn't think it would do a very good job because of how thin it is.  I was really surprised that you get a much deeper embossing with the eBosser.  I wish you could see the beautiful detail on those corners.  If you have the eBosser, be sure to run your items through with the embossing pad for really beautiful details.  You just need to take out the "E" shim, which is the thinnest shim, when using the embossing pad.      

This is how I created the "lazy" daisy. The daisy die cut has 7 petals.  I used the largest stylus from the Flower Tool Kit to shape each petal.  Four of the petals were shaped to bend down and three were shaped to bend up.  I folded the daisy in "half" with the four petals folded over three petals.  All the petals are now bent under.   A dab of glue was put right in the center of the folded flower and held for a second or two so it stays closed.   

 For the center of the daisy, I used the smallest dies in the Spellbinders "Classic Ovals Scalloped" dies.  It was die cut using a light yellow card stock.  I only used one end of this oval.  You can make it as large as you like, trimming the edges to fit in the center of the flower. Attach with a little glue to the center of the folded flower.

To make the center more realistic, I added glue to the yellow portion and dipped it in "Lemon Yellow" Flower Soft. In this picture you can see the difference the Flower Soft made.  The flower on the right does not have Flower Soft added to it yet.   If you want a brown center you could use "Toffee" Flower Soft or even "Black".   These daisies would be very pretty die cut in yellow or pink then add a dark center.

For the stems and leaves, I used the Cheery Lynn Build A Flower Embellishments #2 dies.  The stems have thorns, to go with the roses, but I just sniped them off, then added the leaves.

I still have daily appointments trying to get well from my accident and don't always have time to work on cards every day.  This afternoon I had some time and enjoyed being creative.  Cheery Lynn has come out with some smaller doilies that are so fun to work with.  I used the "Turkish Lace Doily" and the matching "Angel Wing" die on this card.  The corners were die cut using the Cheery Lynn (B173) corners.  

In the center of the doily I added the butterfly using the Memory Box "Darla" and "Vivienne" dies.  I used yellow card stock to die cut the "Darla" (solid) shape, sponged it with Orange Distress Ink then used a dotted stamp to add black dots to it.  The black Vivienne butterfly was glue on top.  

The the flowers were created with dies from the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower" sets.  The lilies were created with dies from the Build A Flower #3 dies and embellishments and the small yellow flowers were created with petals from the Build A Flower #2 dies.  The lily leaves are from the Build A Flower #2 embellishment dies and the small leaves are from the Cheery Lynn "Flourish Leaf Strip".  The flower petals were die cut using white card stock then sponged with Distress Inks.   I forgot to mention that the pretty border along the bottom of the card is from the new Memory Box "San Marzano Border" die.

Eggshell Mosaic

Today is the last day of workshops over atJoan's Gardens. Joan will be posting the projects later.   One of the projects we planned included an "Eggshell Mosaic Background".  We saw this great tutorial over at SCS here. Rather than post the same card as Joan, I decided to show you another project with this technique. To create this background, you need to clean eggshells then glue them down onto a piece of card stock using Matt Mod Podge.  To get the beautiful colors, you use drops of Adirondack Alcohol Ink.  The colors of Adirondack Ink I used are; Ginger; Rust; and Adirondack Gold Mixatives.  I did not have a yellow Adriondack ink so when I was finished using the other inks, I sprayed my piece with "Butterscotch" Adirondack Color Wash.  It gave me exactly the colors I wanted for my mosaic.

I used the Cheery Lynn "Notre Dame Cathedral Doily" die, cut out of gold shiny card stock, to cover my mosaic.  The mosaic was larger than my doily, but it is very easy to trim it down around the doily with a pair of scissors.  I wanted a background around the mosaic so I used the Cheery Lynn "Large Sunflower Doily".  

My card is 5.5" x 6".  Someone asked me how I get this size of card.  I use an 8.5" x 11" piece of card stock and just cut off 2.5" off, down the long side.  I then have a piece 6" x 11".  When you fold in half you have the 5.5" x 6" size card.  I then use that 2.5" strip I cut off for lots of my smaller die cuts -- especially long borders. 

The green background on this card was embossed with one of the Sizzix "Corners & Lattice Set" embossing folders.  The flower was created using the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #1" dies.  A gold bead was placed in the center of it.  I used foliage around the flower from Cheery Lynn "Mini Flourish One", "Princess Tree"; and one of the Marianne Design "Decorative Elegance" dies.  The corners are from one of the Cheery Lynn "Lace Corners-Deco J" set.

This is a very fun way to create a very realistic mosaic.

Today I am posting a card I created for my daughter.  Her birthday was last Thursday but we are celebrating it tomorrow evening.  She asked me to take her out to dinner at a restaurant she has been wanting to go to for a long time.  It is called "The Melting Pot" which serves many types of Fondue,   I am looking forward to going out to celebrate her special day. 

I had a lot of fun creating this card and did use a lot of different die cuts.  To start I used the Marianne Design Corners (LR0200); two corners were taped down and die cut.  The beautiful doily in the center is the Marianne Design (LR0236). The flower was created using the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #2" dies.   There are a lot of the Marianne Design Decorative Leaves which are listed below.  Two Cheery Lynn butterflies were added.  The small lavender flowers are die cut using the Cheery Lynn "Embellishments #2" dies.  Small Kaiser Craft pearls were added to the center of the flowers.

My daughter usually likes to display her birthday cards, so I put this card on a heavy piece of card stock and attached the Tim Holtz "Small Easel".

Framed Birched Trees

I love Birch Trees and have some in our front yard.  . The tall tree is about 5" tall and has the little notches in the trunk.  I die cut three of the trees and sponged the edges with "Weathered Wood" Distress Ink.  To create this project, I used the three largest Spellbinders "Labels Seventeen" to create frames for the trees.  The marbled background was created by using a piece of glossy card stock and applying different colors of Distress Inks. I put the reinker colors on the Craft Mat and laid the card stock down on the inks, then spritzed with water to blend the colors. To add interest to this, I used the Adirondack "Gold Metallics Acrylic Paint Dabber" which added pretty gold highlights in the marbled design.  The Birch Trees were placed in the framed layers.  

Along the bottom of the frame I die cut the Cheery Lynn "Cinderella's Pumpkins" using brown card stock and applied the Adirondack Metallics Gold Acrylic Paint on it, to match the design in the background.  The leaves are the Cheery Lynn "Small Leaves #1".  They were die cut using a mustard colored card stock then sponged with different colors of Distress Inks.  They were shaped with the tools from the Flower Tool Kit.  The flowers were created with the Cheery Lynn "Build A Flower #1" embellishments.  I used the six point base to create them.  The stamens were created with the embellishments from the Build A Flower #2 embellishments.  Along the side of the top, I cut two strips of the burgundy card stock and added some pearl embellishments I had in my "stash".  

This is a picture to show you the back.This project is large, so I decided to add the Tim Holtz Sizzix small easel to the back.  This easel die comes in so handy for so many projects; it is very easy to die cut and add to the back of any card or project.

I sure hate to see summer end but we can tell Fall is not far away.  I have been planting Spring blubs and trying to get the flower beds ready for Winter.  Normally we can see mountains all around us, but there are so many fires in Washington that we can't even see the mountains, because of all the smoke.   All the smoke causes lots of us to be coughing, sneezing, and have runny eyes.  Maybe we will have a rain soon to put out all the fires!  Guess this is a good reason to stay inside and create, huh!

I have had questions about the smallest petals on the Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #2 die set; some of you didn't know what type of flower you can create with them. You can create a lot of different small flowers with them including small roses with these petals.  On this card I have used the small petals for the little roses that are on the bottom border.  I will explain below how I created them.

The design paper is from the Echo park Paper Co called "Dots & Stripes".  I love to use that pretty window die from Heartfelt Creations; it is the HCD 710 die.  Across the bottom of it is one of the Spellbinders "Ribbon Banners" with a sentiment from the JustRite stamp set "Faith".  

The pretty border along the bottom of the card is the DieNamics "Dizzy Border".   This is such a delicate looking border that you can string ribbon through; I just added a pearl to the center of three of the centers and added flowers to the other two.  This border is 6" long, but you could easily cut it down. The corners are one of the Cheery Lynn "Lace Corners" set.  

All three of the flowers were built using the new Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #2 dies.  You can build the small roses just like you do the larger ones by using the small 5-point base.  I tried something new today.  I used the pointed end of the white tool from the Flower Tool kit to shape the flowers.  After conditioning them, I added a thin layer of the Ultimate glue to the inside of each petal and wrapped them around the end of the white tool.  It was easy to just keep adding petals until I got the size I wanted.  If you use just a thin layer of glue on the petals, it makes it easy to wrap them around the tool and the glue will actually dry fairly quickly.  I held each petal, firmly around the tool, for about a minute until it stuck together then added the next petal.  Pull the flower off the tool as soon as the flower will keep it shape; it will slide off with a push of your fingernail.  Use scissor to cut off the bottom part of the flower so it will have a flat bottom and sit nicely on your card.  The petals were die cut using white card stock and were sponged with Memento "Lilac Posies" ink.  I created the baby's breath with the Build A Flower #2 Embellishments dies.

With Sympathy

Cheery Lynn just came out with four beautiful new die cut sentiments and today I want to show you one I haven't used yet.  This "With Sympathy" die cut is very delicate. Here is a little hint:  when I die cut these delicate sentiments, most of the time they stay in the card stock instead of popping out or staying in the die.  When this happens, I place it on the black mat I use to shape flowers and gently push around the sentiment and it will pop up and away from the card stock.   I brushed on a thin coat of "Glue N' Seal" to adhere it to the design paper.  The design paper is from the Pink Paislee "Butterfly Garden 6x6" pad.

The flower was created using the Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #2 dies.  The stamens are from the Build A Flower #2 Embellishments set.  The flower was created by using yellow vellum for the petals.  I sponged the edges with Wild Honey Distress Ink.  The petals were then spritzed with some water and shaped around the barrel of the white tool from the Flower Tool Kit.  Place the petal around the tool and pinch from side to side to create the wrinkles in each petal.  When you create your flowers from the Build A Flower #2 set, you can mix the style of petals on that plate as long as you keep them approximately the same size especially when you are giving extra shape to the petals as I did here.  It makes it easy to place a piece of card stock/vellum over that section of the die and just die cut all nine petals.  I have even used a variety of these petals when creating roses.  As you know, every petal in a flower is not identical.  I die cut two of the stamens with the little circles on the ends  out of yellow card stock;  then on each little circle used a marker to add  a darker color to help make them stand out.

The flower was placed on the Memory Box "Quinn Flourish".  Marianne leaves and greenery were placed under it.  The pretty butterfly is from the Penny Black "Social Butterfly" stamp set.  This set has four sizes of beautiful butterflies, a dragonfly, a butterfly corner, and a sentiment.  It was stamped on white card stock using "Forest Moss" Distress Ink, cut out then sponged with Tea Dye Distress Ink, then attached with dimensional tape.

Autumn Flowers

Hope you are enjoying your Labor Day Weekend.  Today I designed a card using the Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #2 dies.  I thought I would answer some of your questions on my blog, which I will do after telling you about this card.  The background paper is from a scrap I had in a box.  The beautiful doily is the new Marianne Design "Anja's Large Oval".  The sentiment and bird are from JustRite stamp sets; Always & Forever Medallion Labels and Spring Rose Medallions.  The large leaf is Memory Box "Cottage Leaf" and the smaller leaves are the Cheery Lynn "Olive Branches".  The flowers were created with the Build A Flower #2 dies. 

This is a picture of the pieces used for the flowers.  The glue I usually use to put my flowers together with is "Crafter's Pick - The Ultimate!" glue.  I put a dab of it on my Teflon craft sheet and dip the tips of the petals in it to attach to the flower base.  I have been asked if you really need the Flower Tool Kit.  In my opinion I couldn't do without it.  There are three pieces I use every single day; they are the self-closing tweezers, the largest stylus, and the white flower shaping tool.  That white tool is always used because it conditions the paper really easy with the large ball end; I use the pointed tip to press the petals down into the center of the base to help shape it; you can curl the petals with that pointed end; and I shape flowers around the center of this tool  when I want that "crinkled" look for the petals. There are a lot of other pieces I use in this kit, but these are the "MUST" haves. This kit is well worth the money! The other important thing for me is to have a good (black) shaping mat and a Teflon Craft Sheet.  When you use the Teflon Craft Sheet, the glue does not stick and your flower will pull right off.    When you have all the right tools, it really helps you make beautiful flowers.  

The picture above shows all the die cut pieces I used for the flowers on my card.  I used Brushed Corduroy Distress Ink on the ends of the petals. The petals I used are the smallest petals in the set - not the ones with the deckled edges.  You can sponge the petals in the die and the lines in the die will show up.   After I put them together, I felt like I needed to add a little Walnut Stain Distress Ink on the very edge so they matched the brown behind the Marianne Doily; I used a small sponge dauber to do that.  As you can see in the top of the picture, I used the four point base from the Cheery Lynn Build A Flower #2 Embellishments  and created two layers, each with four petals, for the flower.  Three pieces from the stamens in this set were used for each flower.
