Peony Tutorial

On May 8th, I posted a card with a large flower on my blog and have had so many people request I do a tutorial for this flower. Here is the link to the other flower. The dies used to create this flower are the Spellbinders "Peony" dies. I have used some other new products from Joan's Gardens. The white doily was cut with the "Italian Flourish" doily die; the white flower sprig and the green leaf flourishes are the new Marianne Creatables that Joan now carries. The butterflies are also part of the doily die collection and these mini butterflies come in a set of three. Joan carries three different sizes of these beautiful butterflies. The pink flowers were created with the "Small Blossom" punch. The banner along the bottom of the card was created with the Martha Stewart "Deco Shells" border punch. The sentiment is from JustRite "Elegant Frames". All pieces were arranged and attached as shown with "Art Glitter" Designer Adhesive.  All products used on this card can be purchased from Joan's Gardens.

Below is a tutorial on how I created the large flower:

Use Spellbinders Peony Nestabilities.  Cut four or five of each of the four smallest flowers.  Every flower you create will be a little different depending on how many petals of each size you wish to use,.

Cut toward center of each flower to create separate petals.  When you do this it allows the flower to shape and look more realistic.

For my flower, I sponged pink ink on the edges, both front and back, to give it a two toned effect.

Using the black mat and tool from the "Flower Tool Kit", each flower was shaped.  You can get full direction on how to do this in the "Paper Bouquet" book that Joan sells.

For the very center of this flower three "Small Sun" stamens were cut between each point, shaped and glued together.

When I create flowers from punches I always punch a lot of extra pieces so I know I have enough to create what I want and then save the extra pieces for other flowers at a later date.  You can experiment with getting the look you want by stacking the flowers together, before gluing, just to see how many of each flower (petal layer) to want to use for the finished flower.  You can get so many different looks with the same punched/die cut pieces by changing the number of layers, the type of stamen, and the shaping of the petals. I'm sure you know this by now, but I really love creating flowers with die cuts  and/or punches.

Tea with Bella

Don't you love all the stamps in the new Heartfelt Creations Bella Rose Collection!   This stamp set is called called "Tea with Bella PreCut Set".  I also used the "Classic Bella Rose PreCut set" to add additional rose buds.  The  beautiful flourish is one of the dies in the Bella Rose Die set.  This is my favorite flourish and you will see it on many cards I create in the future. 

The tea cup was stamped and colored with Copic markers.  It was cut out with scissors.  Two additional rose buds were stamped, colored, and cut out with matching dies. The flourish was die cut using green card stock.   I have had some questions about how to use the dies from Heartfelt Creations and want to tell you these dies are manufactured by Spellbinders and can be used in any die cut machine; the Cuttlebug, Big Shot, Vegabond, or the Grand Calibur.  I love that Heartfelt Creations has matching Spellbinder dies for many of their stamps. There is a video on Joan's Gardens to show you how to use the Heartfelt Creations dies.

To assemble this card a piece of green design paper was placed on the front.  One of the new Cheery Lynn doily dies, "Kiwi Doily", from Joan's Gardens was die cut and cut in half to place behind the cup. The flourish was attached to the left side then the cup was attached with dimensional tape over it.  The two additional rose buds were tucked in over the flourish.  Two Spellbinders "Parisian Accents" were added to the top corners to complete the card.

Combined Challenges at Joan's Gardens

 Tomorrow (Thursday) is the day for a new challenge at Joan's Gardens.  Joan announced last week that this will be the last week for both the card and tag challenges until next Fall.  For this week, both the Tag and Card Challenges will be combined. For this challenge, we are asking you to create both a Tag and a Card which will be posted separately; one in the card challenge and one in the tag challenge. There are no specific challenge rules - only that you make a matching tag and card. For each set you enter, you will be eligible to win one of the beautiful new Marianne Embossing Folders (retail value $30.00). The winner will be chosen by a random drawing, held on Thursday May 26.

For my matching tag and card, I used stamps from the new Heartfelt Creations "Bella Rose Collection".  For the card I used both stamps from the "Bella Rose Vase PreCut Set".  The baby's breath was stamped with VersaMark Ink and white embossed on a piece of purple card stock.  The vase of roses was stamped on white card stock, colored with Copic markers and cut out.  Two additional roses and one set of leaves were cut from a second stamped image and attached with dimensional tape.  Two Spellbinders "Parisian Accents" corners were added.  A Martha Stewart double punched border was added with a piece of ribbon attached across the middle with ScorTape.  The design paper has squares on it and large rhinestones were added to each square down the sides. 

The tag was created with the Heartfelt Creations "Tea with Bella PreCut Set".  This is the set with the tea cup with a rose at the base of the cup.  I used this rose for my tag.  The same design paper was used for the tag.  Two of the small Spellbinders "Parisian Accents"  were added to the top corners.  The "Accent" for the sentiment is also from this Spellbinders die set.  The sentiment is from Heartfelt Creations "Springtime Cardinal Collection".  It was cut out with a circle Nestability, sponged and attached with dimensional tape to the Parisian Accent.  Matching rhinestones were added to the bottom.  Purple ribbon was added to the top of the tag.

As you know, Joan and I have been working with LaBlanche stamps since the first of the year and we both love the detail in this line of stamps.  You will find a great variety of LaBlanche stamps at Joan's Gardens.  La Blanche Stamps are mounted on very lightweight, hard foam and the stamps themselves are made from high quality silicon, which results in very detailed images.  The stamps are "white" but as I posted on my blog before, if you use Memento Black Ink they clean up perfectly with just water.  Here is a link to a mini tutorial I did about these fabulous stamps.

I had a wonderful surprise about a week ago.  LaBlanche stamps wrote to me and said they loved what I was designing with their stamps and asked me to be a guest designer using a few of the new stamps that will be coming out later in June.  I was excited to be asked, and here is my first card from the upcoming release.

The LaBlanche stamp used on this card is called "Big Straw Hat".  Isn't it a cute image!  It was stamped on white card stock with Memento black ink and colored with Copic markers.  I wanted to frame the image so I used the Cuttlebug "Grace's Frame" embossing folder.  Using a craft knife, the inside of the frame was cut out so I could place the stamped image behind it.

The design paper used on this card is from the "Sweet Fairy" paper pad from Joan.  I thought the perfect embellishment for this card would be a daisy created like the one in the stamped image.  To do this, I used the punches shown above.    The petals were punched with the Mega Elongated Leaves punch using yellow card stock. The smallest petals were used.   They were sponged with a darker yellow on the tips and an yellow/orange ink on the stamen end.  A gray marker was used to create the lines in each petal. The flowers were shaped with the "Flower Tool Kit".  The stamens were created using five "Medium Sparkles" and four "Small Cosmos".  To get the feathered look, each sparkle and cosmos petal were cut right down the center.  The petals were glued to the Large Delicate Snowflake.  The leaves were created with the same Elongated Leaves punch.  They were punched out on green card stock, sponged and shaped.  The largest leaves were used.  To complete the card, a pretty yellow "double" bow and yellow pearls were added.

A Masculine Card

From time to time we need to create a masculine card.  Joan sent me a set from "Our Craft Lounge" called "Fishing With Dad".  I don't feel I am very good at creating cards where I need to do a lot of sponging but felt that is what this card needed.  The trees and fisherman were stamped using VersaFine Ink and embossed with clear embossing powder.  Using a stamp from Heartfelt Creations, the clouds were stamped with VersaMark Ink and clear embossed.  Using sponge daubers, the different colors were sponged around the images.  I used both large and small sponge daubers.  The larger sponge daubers give a smoother coverage for larger areas. The detail in the clouds does not show up well in the photo but they do look very realistic. 

A Penny Black stamp set I received from Joan's Gardens last year, called "Enjoy Life", was used for the bushes down on the bottom corners.   The sentiment is from the JustRite "You Inspire Me" stamp set and the tag is also from JustRite called "Grommet Tags".  There are three pretty tags in this set.   The fish from the "Fishing With Dad" set was stamped, colored with Copic markers, cut out with scissors and attached on the tag with dimensionals.

This stamp set from Our Craft Lounge has six image stamps and six sentiments and will be perfect for some of those masculine cards you need to make.

Bella Rose Collection

Heartfelt Creations has a new beautiful collection just released called "Bella Rose".  This is such a gorgeous collection of roses I am sure you will want to add to your collection.  You can see the entire collection at Joan's Garden's. 

Today I have combined two of these new sets to create a shadow box.  The shadow box was cut 6" square with 1/2" score lines down two sides to create the box.  An opening was cut in the top piece with the Spellbinders Labels 17 die.  A piece of blue design paper was placed on the inside for a backing.  The "Bella Rose Lattice Background PreCut Set (HCPC 3396) was stamped on white card stock and colored with Copic markers.  It was cut out with scissors.  To cut out between the lattice, the craft knife from the Flower Tool Kit was used.  Additional roses from "Classic Bella Rose PreCut Set" were stamped, colored, and cut out with matching dies to give dimension to the flowers on the lattice.  The beautiful butterfly is from the same set as the birdhouse "Bella Rose House PreCut Set" (HCPC 3392).  It was stamped, colored with Copic markers and two colors of Stickles added.   The bird house was stamped, colored and cut out to add to the top of the shadow box.  An additional rose was added to also give it more dimension.   Three Spellbinders Parisian Accents corners were added to the top to give the top a finished look.  A 6" square was cut to place on the back of the shadow box and the Martha Stewart "Doulbe Arches" punch was used to add a border to each side.

Punched Sweet Peas

Did you know that there is a special punch for creating pretty Sweet Pea flowers?  I love sweet peas and was so excited to get the sweet pea punch to give this a try.  I used the directions in the "Paper Bouquet" book by Susan Tierney Cockburn.  This is the book I use to learn how to create most of the flowers I create for my cards and boxes. It has excellent instructions and pictures for creating 40 different flowers.  You can get this book and the punches needed for these pretty flowers at Joan's Gardens.  Joan does have these punches, flower tool kits,  and book in stock. 

The background for this card was created with the new Embossing Folder from Joan's Gardens.  She does not have it on her blog yet, but you can call or email her and tell her you want the embossing folder I used on this card. A piece of pink card stock was attached below the die cut openings on this embossed folder.   On the left side of the card, I used one of the double punched borders I showed you how to create a few days ago.  I used the same punch "Martha Stewart String Lace" border punch, to create a border around the outside of the card.  The pretty "Flourish" is the flourish from the new Heartfelt Creations Bell Rose Collection.   This is the most beautiful flourish I own and I know I will be using it a lot.  The sentiment and frame are from the JustRite "Elegant Frames" stamp set. 

The sweet peas were punched out of pink vellum and created as described in the Paper Bouquet book.  The sweet peas in the book were not created with vellum but I love the dainty look of the vellum.  The leaves were attached below each flower along with a paper tendrils created with thin strips of green card stock.

The stamp set I used today is the "Vintage Bella Rose Background".  I stamped the image twice so I could use different portions to create a dimensional card.  The image was colored with Copic markers and sponged with "Tea Dye" Distress Ink.  The leaves at the top of the card, butterfly and roses were cut out and attached with dimensional tape. The roses were placed over over the beautiful Bella Rose Flourish Die.   On the left side of the card I place a portion of the Cheery Lynn "Lattice die" you can purchase from Joan's Gardens. Three yellow pearls were added.  A pretty yellow bow was added to complete the card.  Be sure to go over to Joan's Gardens to view all the new sets in this Bella Rose Collection.  I'm sure you are going to love them all.  

Joan's Gardens Tag Challenge

Time to create a new tag for Joan's Gardens Tag Challenge.   Today I used the new Spellbinders Rose Creations dies to create my flowers using pink vellum.   The leaves under the roses are die cut from the new Spellbinders "Foliage" dies. 

The tag was created using white card stock.  The top corners were punched with the Martha Stewart "String Lace" corner punch.  The border along the bottom is one of the borders I punched using the one inch strips of scrap paper that I showed on my blog yesterday. This one was created with the "Beaded Arcs" punch.

The sentiment and frame are from two new JustRite sets "Signs of Life" and "Just Because".   You will love these sets - there are seven frames in the Signs of Life set with sentiments and pretty corners included.  The Just Because set has a frame and 18 small sentiments that you will use over and over when you need a small greeting. 

The small white flowers were created using the Super Giant Lilacs/Daphne punch.  There are three sizes of this small flower plus other flower/leaf items on this punch.  Small yellow beads were added to the center of each small white flower then Martha Stewart branches tucked in to complete the tag.

Martha Stewart Border Tutorial

Beaded Arcs, Modern Garland, Deco Shells, Rings, Embossed Scroll, String Lace,

Scallop 3 Dot, Swirling Lace, Daisy Dot, Rain Drop, Double Loop

Yesterday I was cleaning out some of my drawers with "scrap" paper.  I had a lot of one inch strips of white card stock and decided to use some of my Martha Stewart border punches to create borders for later use.  For some reason, I decided to turn one around and see if I could create a border on both sides.  Wow!  It worked.  I have taken a picture of eleven different borders created with different Martha Stewart punches and thought I would share them with you. The above list shows name of each punch used in order going from left to right.

To create these perfectly matched borders, start with a 1" strip of card stock.  Line one end up to the end of the border punch.  Punch the length of the card stock then flip it over so you can start on the same end as you began -- see photo above.  You really need to make sure you start punching exactly the same spot to get the design to match up, so lining it up with the edge of the punch is an easy way to do that.  When you do line them up exactly the same on each side, the design will match perfectly.  I had so much fun creating something useful out of those small strips of card stock.

Happy Mother's Day

I hope you are having a wonderful Mother's Day.  Today I have assembled a card using all items previously cut out or created.  The background piece was embossed with the Cuttlebug "Textile Texture" embossing folder and the bottom edge was punched with the Martha Stewart "Beaded Arcs" border punch.  The doily die used is the "Italian Flourish" from Joan's Gardens.  The pink flower was created with Spellbinder dies.  The small white flowers were created with the small daisy punch and mini sun punch for the stamens.  The leaf is from the new "Foliage" Spellbinders die. Martha Stewart branches were tucked in around the flower. The butterflies were punched with a Martha Stewart Butterfly punch and embossed with the same folder as the background.  The card was assembled and a pink silk bow was added to complete the card. 

My DH and I will be having dinner with my daughter and grandchildren this evening to celebrate Mother's Day.

Relax & Enjoy

Today I am back to working with punches and dies from Joan's Gardens.   The rose was created using the Super Giant Begonia Petals punch.  There are five sizes of petals on this punch and all sizes were used.  I used pale yellow card stock and sponged the top of each petal (front and back) with pink ink.  The bottom (center) was sponged with dark yellow ink.  The tools from the Flower Tool Kit were used to shape each one.

The background is a piece of designer paper from a K&Company paper pad.  The square scalloped piece was created with the Martha Stewart "String Lace" border punches.  The next layer up is one of the new Doily Dies from Joan's Gardens called "English Tea Party".  The second doily layered on top of that piece is the "Italian Flourish Doily".

The sentiment is from the new JustRite stamp set "Butterfly Gardens". I used one of the border stamps only.   It was cut out with a Nestability petite circle die.  All pieces were arranged as shown and attached with dimensional tape.  Two vellum leaves were added as well as Martha Stewart branches.   Pearls were added to complete the card.

Joan's Weekly Challenge #17

LaBlanche stamped used

It is time for another challenge at Joan's Gardens. Here is what you need  for this week's challenge:

This week Joan's challenge really is a challenge for me.  I don't feel I create vintage type cards very well.  The lady I used is from LaBlanche.  She is called "Lady Dreaming".   I used the Sizzix "Wreath" embossing folder to frame her.  It was embossed and  cut out with scissors then sponged with green Distress ink.  The lady was stamped, colored with Copic markers then cut out with an Oval Nestability.  It was glued to the inside of the embossed frame.   To pull in the green and blue, I selected a page from the "Sparkling Spring" paper pack.  The embellishment is from a package of Prima Flowers and matches the flowers in the design paper.  It worked out great for my large embellishment.   A piece of vintage lace was attached across the bottom, then a green velvet ribbon attached down the center with ScorTape.   A green bow was added to complete the card.

You've Been So Sweet

Before I tell you about my card today, I want to tell you a little story about patience.  About six years ago my husband and I were at our favorite blueberry farm in Vancouver, Washington buying blueberries, and in the gift shop they were giving away coffee samples.  We were talking to the owner about the coffee and he told us he grows the coffee right there in his house.  He took us over to see his trees, which were in large pots sitting outside because it was summer time. He told us he had gotten the coffee beans when he was in Hawaii.  In the winter he put the trees in a glassed-in porch.  We were so fascinated with his trees he gave us a few coffee beans and told us we could grow a tree.  We took our seeds home and planted them as instructed.  It took months and months for one seed to finally pop up through the soil.  We had this tree for about four years and it never grew higher than 12 inches.  Well finally it took off and recently grew as tall as the ceiling in our dining room.  Each branch was growing straight out (sideways) about three feet and was taking up way too much room.  We really didn't think it would ever make coffee beans!    We decided we had to get rid of it so I went to a florist and she didn't want it but told us how we could sell it.  To make a long story short, we decided to keep this tree but cut it way back so it wouldn't take up so much room.  To our surprise it really starting bushing out and within about a month we saw what we thought were blooms.  Well this morning we found out they really are blooms.  The above picture shows these pretty little flowers.  The tree is full of buds and I think will be full of flowers before long.  I think we really are going to have some coffee beans.  We are very happy now that we didn't get rid of our coffee tree.  Have you ever tried to grow a coffee tree?

Now to my card.  I just received some new JustRite stamps from Joan's Gardens that I have have been wanting.  This card is made using the "Vintage Floral Labels".  This set has two beautiful vintage frames, three corners and five sentiments. This set is mounted on cling foam and you use them with any acrylic block. The image was stamped with black ink and clear embossed on ivory card stock.  It was colored with Copic markers then sponged with Tim Holtz distress ink.  The sentiment was stamped and embossed then cut out with a scallop Nestability.  The yellow frame was cut out with the Spellbinder Beaded Ovals die. 

The designer paper used in the background is from another new paper pack from Joan, called Webster's Pages "Ladies & Gents and Trendsetter" collection.  The stamped image and yellow frame were each attached with dimensional tape.  A blue bow and blue rhinestones were added to complete the card.

Joan's Tag Challenge

It is Tuesday so it is time for a new Tag Challenge at Joan's Gardens.  I want to congratulate Angelica Turner for winning the last challenge.  Her tag was gorgeous.

This week I decided to used the small Tim Holtz Movers and Shapers "Mini Bird & Cage Set" repositionable Magnetic Dies for this card.  I love this small bird cage because it will fit both cards and tags really well.  The design paper used is from the "Moulin Rouge" paper pack.  It was embossed with the Cuttlebug "Textile Texture" folder.  The sentiment and frame are from a new JustRite set called "Sending You Sunshine".  The frame was stamped then cut out with the Spellbinders "Lacy Circles" die.  The center was stamped on another piece of card stock, colored with Copic markers and cut out so it could be attached with dimensional dots.  Kaiser Craft pearls were added to the center of each flower.  Sizzix leaves were added over the top of the bird cage.  The pretty "Prima Flowers" were added to match the flowers in the flower pot.  (The peach color in the stamped image is not showing up well in the photo but the flowers do match the Prima Flowers perfectly.)   The top corners and the bottom of the tag were created using the Martha Stewart "String Lace" border/corner punches.  Blue ribbon was added to the top of the tag.

Punches used for Cherry Blossoms

Today my card was designed around this beautiful die cut butterfly from Joan's Gardens.  The design paper is from a new paper pack called "Butterfly Garden Collection".  Isn't this beautiful paper!  Down in the corner is a picture with a branch of cherry blossoms, so I decided to create some dimensional cherry blossoms for my embellishment on this card.  The punches used for these flowers are the "Large Splatt", "Medium Blossom", "Small Cosmo" and "Mini Sun".  The branch I used is cut using the "Birds & Branches" Sizzix die. All the information for making these pretty flowers are in the Flower Book you can purchase from Joan's Gardens.  I love working with this book because it has so many pretty flowers and the instructions are very easy to follow.  The flowers were shaped using the Flower Tool Kit.  When you have the right tools to work with, it sure makes creating flowers very easy. 

The sentiment is from the new JustRite "Signs of Life" stamp set.  This set has a lot of beautiful frames, corners and sentiments.  The  pretty butterfly die is a Cheery Lynn "Oriental Butterfly" doily die.  The pretty design paper is backed with black card stock.  To finish the card, black Kaiser Craft pearls were added to each corner and on the body of the butterfly.  The sentiment was attached with dimensional dots.

This morning I saw this week's JustRite Inspiration Challenge and thought I would enter a card.  This week's challenge is a sketch challenge.  Here are the requirements:  "The rectangle focal element can be any one of our different shaped stamps, or how about challenging yourself to stamp one of our normally round, square or oval shapes onto a rectangle for a change!"  Here is the sketch to be used:

 

I used one of the new JustRite stamp sets called "Butterfly Gardens".  I love to work with flowers and butterflies so you know I had fun creating this card.  The images in this set are round but your challenge is to create a rectangle so I stamped the image, colored it with Copic markers, then cut around it.  It was mounted onto one of the new Spellbinder dies called "Fleur De Lis Rectangles".  I used the second largest die.  The image was stamped a second time and the butterfly and largest mum were cut out and added with dimensional tape. 

Instead of adding a bow to this card, I decided to create dimensional flowers to match the image.  Using three different sizes of "Daisy" Punches, three flowers from each size were used to create each of the mums.  Using the Flower Tool Kit, each flower was shaped to resemble a mum.  The decorative border was created with the Martha Stewart "Embossed Scroll" border punch.  The design paper is from the new "Botanical" 6x6" paper stack I just received from Joan's Gardens.  The corners were cut with the new Spellbinder "Parisian Accents" dies.  I had to search through some of my leaf dies and found this one by "BossKut" call "Daisy Leaves" that really matched the ones in the stamped image.  They were also shaped with tools from the Flower Tool Kit.  The Martha Stewart butterflies were punched and embossed with the Cuttlebug Textile Texture embossing folder.  "Fruit Punch" Stickles was added for highlights to the flowers and butterflies. I love having a lot of different colors of Stickles to add a special finishing touch to my cards.
