Build A Flower #3 Card & Tutorial

This weekend I have been working on creating flowers with the Cheery Lynn (BAF) Build A Flower #3 dies.  This picture shows all the different flowers that I created.   

Here are some of the flowers you can create with petals from this die:  lily, magnolia, rose, pine cones, gardenia, anemone, violet, tulip, camellia, dogwood, zinnia, aster, tulip, marigold, cosmos, and bachelor button.  You probably can think of even more varieties.  You can combine some of these petals with petals from BAF#1 and #2 for even more varieties of flowers. Sometimes just using different stamens from the three different BAF Embellishments will produce different types of flowers. I like to look at different flowers in books or on the Internet to get ideas of which petals and embellishments to use.  I have completed many tutorials on ways to complete a lot of these flowers (look under tutorials in my side bar).  You can also get great instructions by purchasing "The Paper Bouquet Book" by Susan Tierney-Cockburn.  And as I have always stated, I feel it is a must to have the proper tools for shaping/creating flowers; I always use the "Flower Tool Kit, the "black embossing pad".  The glue I use is "Crafter's Pick".

The background design paper is from the Kaiser Craft "The Lake House" paper pad.  The white frame is one of the Spellbinders "Romantic Rectangles". The piece in the center of this frame was stamped with the JustRite "Lattice Background" stamp.   The sentiment from the JustRite "Faith" stamp set was stamped in the center of the Spellbinders Parisian Accents" die cut.  It was sponged with Distress Ink prior to taking it out of the die.  Green Kaiser Craft Pearls were added to complete the card.

This is a close up of the Star Gazer Lily.  I die cut six of the lily petals and colored them with "Gelatos" which are pigment sticks.  This pigment glides on creamy, vibrant color, and blends beautifully with or without water.  I used a marker to add the dots.  Small dots of glue was added near the center of the petals and "Bright Pink" Flower Soft was added.  When you look closely at the petals on the Star Gazer, you can see little "fuzzies" and the Flower Soft worked great for that added detail. I used the BAF #1 embellishments for the stamen.  A marker was used to add a darker color to the tips of each "leg" of this piece.  A small dot of glue was added to both the front and back of the tip then it was dipped in "Ultra Fine Toffee" Flower Soft.  You must use the "ultra fine" Flower soft to get the right texture.  Under the stamen I added the five point base from the BAF #2 Embellishments.  The lily leaves are also in the BAF#2 Embellishment dies.

I know my friend Fran has been patiently waiting to create some lilies with the new punches she purchased from Joan's Gardens.  I am not feeling very well today, so this is not as perfect as I would like, but I believe it will help anyone wanting to create a lily.  I have made several cards with lilies, so tried something new today.  First I decided to create a "salmon" colored lily.  I wanted it to have white specks in it so I used a new product you can purchase from Joan's Gardens called "Goose Bumps" Texture Spray.  This is a spray that creates a bumpy texture.  This is the first time I used this product and my spray is not at all even but I used the petals anyway.  This new product will create a lot of beautiful backgrounds and I am anxious to play with it more.

To create one lily, you will need six petals from the Mega Lily Petal punch, one medium snowflake, and one large and one medium "sky" snowflakes.  In this picture I have all the pieces to create 3 lilies.  I laid all the petal pieces on the Teflon Craft Sheet and lightly sprayed them with the Goose Bumps spray.  It is clear and was kind of hard for me to tell exactly where I had sprayed, so some of them have more on them than I wanted.  This product has to be completely dry before adding color over the surface.  I used my heat gun to dry it.  Two shades of salmon colored ink were added to each petal with a sponge dauber.  I added the lighter color first then the darker color down on what would be the center of the flower.  I have other colors of lilies on my blog you can check out.  Just go to my sidebar and click on "Punched Flowers" under "Categories". 

 

All the the parts for the flower were shaped with the Flower Tool Kit.  In this picture you can see a shaped petal next to one that is not, and also the shaped stamens.   I used a marker to add color to the round tips of each flake then pressed down in the center with the smaller stylus to "cup" it up.

 

When you start assembling your flower, you slightly cup the medium green snowflake with the stylus.  I start by adding three petals, using every other point on the snowflake.  I like to add glue right to the three points of the green snowflake I will be working with, then add a flower petal pushing it down on the glue and holding it for a few seconds until the petal attaches.  I always do this on the Teflon Craft Sheet; if you are doing it on paper, you might end up with your flower stuck to the paper, and you don't want that.  If you don't have a Teflon craft sheet, you might try working on wax paper.  I like the craft sheet because any glue that gets on it can easily be wiped off with a wet towelette.  I like to always work on this craft sheet when creating my cards.

 

Next step is to add the other three petals.

I forgot to take a picture to show how I added the stamen.  First you want to shape both sizes of the "Sky Flake" (after coloring the round ends).  Glue the smaller flake inside the larger one. Press down well into the black sponge mat with a small stylus to get a well "cupped" stamen.   Add these to the center of the flower.

Using the same "Mega Lily Punch" punch out petals using green card stock for the leaves.  I always use the largest petals.  The largest petals were also used for the flowers in this tutorial.  Use the white tool from the Flower tool kit to shape each leaf.  Use one of the smaller tips in the stylus (the tool kit comes with 4 or 5 stylus tips) and draw a line down the center of each leaf so you can shape it.
