Masculine Birthday Card

 Designing masculine cards is always hard for me.  Today I have a birthday card to show you that I designed for my son.  When he has free time, he loves to get out in nature, so thought this card would appeal to him.  The overall card size is 6" x 6".  The two main items I wanted to use for this card are the Impression Obsession Tree Frame Die (IOB DIE 205YY) and the Penny Black Winter Sky Stamp (4204L).

 I started by using VersaMark Ink to stamp this Penny Black design onto a piece of white card stock.  It was embossed with Ranger's Ultra Fine Black Embossing Powder.  Next I used a 1" circle punch to create a stencil to sponge in the moon with Distress Inks.  I used a small sponge dauber and light yellow ink to create moon light down over the stamped image.  (I was trying to create a night scene but in the photo it looks more like a daytime scene!!)

Along the middle of the stamp image, I placed a piece of card stock, that was cut to resemble a snow bank, across the image and sponged on blue ink.  The round circle I punched out was placed over the sponged on "moon", for a mask, so I could sponge Stormy Sky Distress Ink and a Weathered Wood ink around it.  I used a stamp to create falling snow.  The "dots" were stamped using VersaMark Ink and embossed with Ultra Fine White Embossing Powder.  Be sure to use the anti-static pad over your picture so the embossing powder doesn't stick to some of the sponged on blue ink.  Some glitter was added along the top of the snow bank to help make it stand out.

Next I die cut the Impression Obsession Tree Frame.  Post It Notes were placed around the edge of the frame and the tree was sponged with brown Distress Inks.  I used a pencil to draw in some lines to resemble bark.  Next I used the Ivy Hollow ScrapFusion Needle Point bottle of glue to add some dots of glue on the tree branches and added Polar White Flower Soft to make the tree very dimensional.  The Flower Soft was also added along the very bottom of the frame.  Two of the Memory Box Resting Birds (98527) were added to the die cut tree branches.   

To make the card very dimensional, I added dimensional tape along the outside edge of the frame and some dimensional tape under the wider trunk and branches before attaching it over the stamped image.  The stamped image was trimmed to fit perfectly under the die cut frame.  

For the background on the 6x6 inch card, I embossed a piece of Navy Blue card stock with the Die'sire Embossalicious Happy Birthday Embossing Folder (EF6-Happy).  This piece was layered over light gray card stock.  The Dee's Distinctively "Deer 1" die was die cut using dark brown card stock and attached with a double layer of dimensional tape.

Have a Magical Holiday

I need to make more Christmas cards and created a bunch of Susan's Garden White Poinsettias to have for future cards.  I used one on this card using the Marianne Design DF3406 embossing folder. I received a couple of sheets of Marianne Design "Tiny's Winterworld" landscape scenes, and used one of the scenes in the center of the embossed design. To get the cut out in the embossed design, I used one of the Heartfelt Creations  1B Cut Mat Create dies.  The scene was cut out and glued behind the opening.  A piece of green card stock was glued on the backside of the embossed piece to show through the die cut areas.

The poinsettia was created using Susan's Garden Poinsettia dies.  Behind the poinsettia I used the Susan's Garden Branch and Stem dies to create the snow covered twigs.  The branches were misted with water then pinched to shape them.  Texture Paste was added for snow then dipped in glitter.  There is also some pine branches and pine cones behind the flower.  On the very bottom of the flower, some pieces of cheese cloth were glued down before layering the other pieces on.  I added some red glitter decorations I found in the Christmas section of the craft store.  The sentiment is from the JustRite Christmas Inner Thoughts stamp set.

Let It Snow

 

I love to create scenes with stamps and dies.  Today I decided to work with one of my old Hero Arts snowman stamps called "Stove-Pipe Snowman".  He was stamped on white card stock and colored with Copic Markers.  For the blue background, I used the Metallic Blueberry Gelato.  I scribbled it on the Non-Stick Craft Sheet and sprayed it with water to make a watercolor then brushed it on.  For the snowbanks, I die cut the Poppystamps Puffy Cloud Border a bunch of times and fit it around the snowman.  The trees were die cut with the Impression Obsession Fir Trees Die.  Above the snowman I drew snowballs and glued on some tiny Styrofoam balls I bought at the hobby shop.  Down by the bottom of the snowman, I glued more Styrofoam balls to form a mound of snowballs.  The snowflakes and sentiment are from the JustRite "Large Fancy Holiday Sentiments" stamp set.  (This stamp set is on sale right now.)

Tis the Season to be Jolly

As you know, I love snowmen so when I found this cute snowman frame I thought it would be perfect to add some Susan's Garden red poinsettias for a home decor piece I can put out this Christmas. Under the poinsettias is an open space where you could add a photo, but I decided it was a perfect area to filled it with flowers.  You can watch Susan Tierney-Cockburn's Poinsettia video at this LINK to see how to assemble these beautiful flowers.  Under the poinsettias, I added some Impression Obsession Pine Branches.  I also added a few other embellishments from my stash around the flowers.

Remember I posted a picture of my poinsettia plants from last Christmas.  Well in order to get flowers this year, I have to place the plants in total darkness from 5pm to 8 am every night for a month.  Finding total darkness was hard -- it has to be a place where not a speck of light can get to them.  They have to be in light during the day. We taped some thick black plastic around a table, like a skirt, that sits under a window in the basement, and place them under the table at night.   I am so excited to see if I really get flowers. If this works, I will post a picture of them.

Enjoy the Sweet Moments of the Season

Last year I enjoyed working with Goosebumps Texture Spray on poinsettias I created with the Susan's Garden Poinsettia dies and wanted  to create some more cards using that technique.  I die cut the Susan's Garden poinsettia petals using a light yellow card stock, shaped the petals using the tools in the Susan's Garden Tool Kit, then sprayed the petals with Goosebumps.  Once the goosebumps was dry, I sponged on cranberry ink.  The color is much prettier in real life.

The background piece was embossed with the Susan's Garden Bird embossing folder.  There are two embossing folders in this set - the other one is a wreath.  I love that cute embossed bird.  I hope you can see it in the lower right corner.  Around the edge of the white panel, I used the Tim Holtz Ruler to punch nice even holes.  The  Tim Holtz Ruler is my favorite ruler because it is a clear acrylic ruler that has a grid background for perfect placement, a center measuring guide, a straight edge for drawing lines, a metal edge for cutting, plus spaced holes for paper piercing

The poinsettia is attached with dimensional glue dots, above four Impression Obsession Pine Branches.  I die cut the pine branches in white to match the embossed design.  Under the poinsettia, I added some pearl embellishment I purchased from a floral shop.

The sentiment is from the Heartfelt Creations Sweet Memories PreCut Set.

A Little Time for Golf

 

We recently returned from a wonderful trip with our son to the St. Eugene Resort in Cranbrook, Canada.  While there, one of the things we did was to spend several days golfing -- I only drove the golf cart and watched my husband, son and grandson golf.  The Resort is located in a breathtaking location in front of the gorgeous Fisher Peak and the Rocky Mountain Range and has a beautiful golf course where we saw a lot of wildlife, closeup,  including a Doe with her fawn.  Here is a picture of my husband in front of the Resort.  This trip was a belated Father's Day gift, which I got to enjoy too!  Here is a picture of the Resort where we stayed.

   My husband asked me to design a thank you card to send to our son.  I used the Memory Box, Golf Club Landscape and Mini Golf Cart dies to create a golfing scene.  Along with the Golf Club Landscape, I also used the Memory Box Country Landscape die to create a series of hills in the landscape.  The additional trees were die cut using the Impression Obsession, Fir Trees dies.  For the sky, I stamped the Impression Obsession, Clouds, Cover A Card background stamp.  I used Stormy Sky Distress Ink for the sky.

In the Garden of Life

 I have been on vacation and it was nice to get back to creating again.  Today I have a birthday card I designed for my friend Pat.  She loves birds so I designed this card using the Impression Obsession "Bird on Branch" die.  The small birds are the Marianne Design Birds (LR0206) dies (which is an older die set).  The birds and leaves were colored using the new Susan's Garden Pan Pastels. The doily used is the new Marianne Design (LR0317) die.  The Sentiment is from the "Garden Phrase Set" by Rubbernecker.  The flowers were created with the Susan's Garden Mini Daisy dies.  The flowers were shaped using the Susan's Garden Flower Tool Kit.  In the center I added some Yellow Flower Soft.

I think we all love daisies.  If you are like me, you like to be creative with your flower dies to create more than just one style flower. Today I thought I would show you another way to use your Susan's Garden Mini Daisy dies.   I had some polka dot embellishments I thought made cute stamens for these daisies.  These were purchased from  Michaels.  

I have a tutorial below, to show you how I created the daisies but first I'll give you info on the die cuts used to create this scene.  The fence is the Poppy Stamps Picket Fence, the stems for the daisies is the Impression Obsession tall grass, Clouds are the Memory Box Puffy Clouds, Memory Box Gold Finch,  and butterflies were cut from the Memory Box Butterfly vine.  The sentiment is from a Paper Smooches Scripty Sayings stamp set.

Here is a little tutorial on how I created the daisies.

 Use the calyx from the Susan's Garden Mini Daisy die set.  Use the leaf tool from the Susan's Garden Flower Tool Kit to score a line across the middle (on the leaf pad from the kit) leaving four legs on each side of the score line.

 Use the bone folder to crease the calyx in half.  You can see the open calyx on the left and the folded one in the middle.  I used eight daisy petals that were colored with Susan's Garden Pan Pastels at the base then shaped with the small loop tool on the thick shaping pad.

 This picture shows the daisy upside down with the bottom four petals glued to the four bottom calyx points.

 This picture shows the top petals added to the top calyx points.

 This is what the finished flower petal base will look like.  Press down on the fold of the calyx so it is just slightly open.  

You can then add whatever you want to create the center of the flower such as: pearls, rhinestones, Susan's Garden Pollen, etc.

Basket of Violets and a Ladybug Tutorial

 Today I have created a basket of Violets for an Easter card.  The violets were created using Susan's Garden Pansy/Violet dies.  The violets were created as shown on Susan's Video at this Link.  In the center of each flower I added a dot of the yellow Paper Pen from the Susan's Garden Viva Decor Paper Pen Set.

The gorgeous die cut at the top of the card is a new Marianne Design Anja's Border, which is now in stock at  Ellen Hutson, LLC. There are two dies in this set.   The basket is also a Marianne Design die (CR1207). The small leaves behind the violets is the Impression Obsession, Leafy Branch.   The little bunny is one of the three bunnies from the Impression Obsession Bunny die.  I added a tiny black pearl to its eye and a small white pom pom to the tail.

Did you notice the cute little ladybugs on some of the leaves and in the grass? I have had some of you ask me how to create these  ladybugs.   They were made with the Susan's Garden Lady Bug Kit.  I just received my Ellen Hutson, LLC  Newsletter and in it is the following statement: "Have you noticed the ladybugs Susan adds to each of her flowers?  We are so happy to share that we have a very special Viva Decor Susan's Garden Ladybug kit now available.  Don't delay... get your kit now because we are not certain how long it will be available!"

 Below is a tutorial on how I created the ladybugs for my card:

When you receive your Susan's Garden Ladybug Kit, be sure to watch for the thin wire that will be in the package.  This wire is used to unclog the narrow tip after you finish using the black Viva Decor Pearl Pen.  In is shown at the bottom between the two bottles of Pearl Pens.  The fine tip should be used with the Black Pearl Pen to create the small dots on the back of the ladybug.

Work on your Non Stick Craft Mat and first add a dot of the Red Pearl Pen the size you want your ladybug to be.  Try to get a nice round circle.  Next use the Black Pearl Pen with the fine tip on it and add a dot of black to one end of the red dot, kind of pressing in so it "melts" into the red body.  I like to make a lot of these at one time.  It is not necessary for you to wait for these to dry, but I like to continue once they are dry, because I think I get better looking black dots.  Susan does this step while the red is still wet.   If you are using your Craft Mat from the Susan's Garden Tool Kit, it is easy to set your ladybugs aside until they are dry.  Don't leave them right where you are working, because I found out the hard way, you may end up laying something on them and it will totally mess them up if they are touched while wet!

 Once they are dry, I go back with the fine tip and add the black dots to the back.

 You can make very tiny ladybugs or larger ones, it is going to depend on the amount of red Paper Pearl that you use.  if the ladybug is large enough, you can add a very thin black line right down the center of the back, then add your black dots.  I have created a variety of sizes and save them in a little plastic box so I always have them ready to use.  (The truth is that they are so fun to make I can't stop!!!!)

I have had some questions about my sister in law.  She had a pretty rough time of getting through the double mastectomy surgery.  She ended up with two surgeries - the first one was seven hours long, and the next day had to go back for a second surgery because something was left inside.  She has been in a lot of pain but doing much better. Pansies

 

 It has been snowing at our house for several days now.  I keep hoping that Spring is just around the corner, but I think we will have winter weather for a while.

Today I have designed a card using Susan's Garden Pansy dies.  Susan Tierney-Cockburn has a video to show you steps for creating the pansy with her dies at this LINK.  Behind the pansies I added Impression Obsession Leafy Branch.  Pieces of the branch were cut off and glued under the flowers.

The yellow background was embossed with the Embossalicious (EF6-ELFME) folder.  A sweet friend sent me the beautiful Marianne die (LR0300).  Just above the pansies I die cut two of the Cheery Lynn "Horizon Coved Rectangle Boutique Stacker Frames".  The sentiment is from Heartfelt Creations.  

The two butterflies were die cut using the Memory Box, Precious Butterflies die. There are two butterflies in this set and each one is attached to a bow. I cut off the bows and sponged the butterflies with yellow and tan ink.  White pearls, colored with a yellow Copic marker,  were added to complete the card.

Dogwoods

Good Morning.  It is so nice to be back to creating every day.  It is very cold here but think we are lucky because other parts of the country are much colder.  I always look forward to Spring to see all the beautiful flowers and flowering bushes and trees come to life after a cold Winter.  I planted a pink dogwood tree six years ago, because I love dogwoods, but so far it has never bloomed.  I'm not sure why, but if it doesn't bloom this year I guess I will buy another one and see if I have any luck in getting one to bloom.  At least I can create very realistic dogwoods using dies for my cards and projects!

The most realistic flowers can be created with the Susan's Garden Dogwood dies. If you are not familiar with Susan's dies, every flower packet contains all the dies needed to complete the flower and the leaves.  There are picture instructions in the package to show you how to create the flower, plus Susan has a video for each one.   Here is a link to Susan Tiernery-Cockburn's Dogwood video showing you how to assemble these Dogwoods. I followed Susan's instructions and also placed the flowers on some wired sisal rope that I purchased from Hobby Lobby. This gives the appearance of the dogwoods on a branch.  I have created white Dogwoods, but my favorite are the pink ones.   Both the flower petals and leaves were die cut using white card stock and colored with Susan's Garden Pan Pastels. The pink highlights were colored using the Copic RV34 Dark Pink marker.   In order to show off these beautiful Dogwoods, I decided to place them on a simple black and white card.  The pretty stamped image I chose is the  Impression Obsession "Nest Collage" .  It was embossed using VersaMark Ink and Ranger Distress Black Soot Embossing Powder.   I plan to attach this piece to the top of a box which will include a birthday gift.

Red Poinsettia

I have been so busy getting ready for Christmas. The tree and all the decorations are up, but I still have lots of baking I want to get done.   My whole family will be coming for a family reunion this year and I am trying to get lots of things ready before they start arriving next week.  I have also been working on other projects that will be posted later.  I will have a special post next Sunday I don't think you will want to miss. 

This card was inspired by a "leftover" from another project I am working on.  The colored frame behind the poinsettia is the die cut left after die cutting the Susan's Garden 1 7/8" Grid Works squares that will be used on another project.  I think the frame left from around the squares makes a perfect window that I could not waste.  Behind the Grid Works Frame, I added the Poppy Stamps, "Diamond Background" die cut.

The beautiful poinsettia was die cut using the Susan's Garden Poinsettia dies.  The flower was die cut using red card stock.  The petals were shaped using the Susan's Garden Flower Tool Kit.  On the tips of the stamens, I used both the green and yellow, Susan's Garden Viva Decor Paper Pens.    Behind the poinsettia I placed some Poppy Stamps Delicate Fern, Poppy Stamps Meadow Leaf, and Impression Obsession Pine Branches, for filler.  I love to add birds to my creations. Isn't that fat little bird, behind the poinsettia, cute!  It is an Impression Obsession Bird.  It was stamped on white card stock and colored with Distress Ink. It is an easy stamped image to cut out and mount with a Pop Up Glue Dot.  The poinsettia was also attached with a Pop Up Glue Dot.

 Today I have a Christmas card designed with another new die from the Susan's Garden Collection called "Conservatory Window".  It is a perfect background for the beautiful poinsettias you can create with the Susan's Garden "Poinsettia" dies.

The Window was die cut and backed with a piece of glittery pale yellow card stock.  In front of the window I added the pretty Memory Box "Glowing Candles" die.  The poinsettia was created using the three smallest petals in the Susan's Garden "Poinsettia" die set.  I love that you can create a variety of sizes of poinsettias with this set.   Behind the flower I placed four of the Poppy Stamps "Berry Sprig" die cuts.  This is a die cut that looks great on your Christmas cards but will also be used a lot with your spring and summer flower die cuts.  On the berries I added "Chipped Sapphire" Distress Stickles, to match the design in the paper.  Also behind the poinsettia are a few Impression Obsession "Pine Branches".   "Clear Rock Candy" Distress Stickles was added to the candles, poinsettia and greenery.

Merry Christmas Pink Poinsettia and Pine Branch Tutorial

This pink poinsettia made such a pretty Christmas card.  I used Susan's Garden Poinsettia dies for the flower. I took this picture at an angle so you can see the great dimension of the poinsettia.  All the pieces for the flower were die cut using white card stock.  The petals were shaped using the Susan's Garden Tool Kit.  To get the beautiful shade of pink, I used the light pink in the Susan's Garden Pan Pastels to cover the petals using the Pan Pastel Soft Tools. Using these tools helps you get a quick, very even color coat to your project.   The bright pink Pan Pastel was used down the center of the large petals and over the majority of the smaller petals, in the center, to give it good shading. I used a Pan Pastel Sofft Mini Applicator to apply the bright pink along the vein. The stamens were colored pink then the Moss Green Via Decor Paper Pen, from the Susan's Garden 3-Pack was added to the tips of each stamen.  Soft Lemon Flower Soft was sprinkled on the wet Paper Pen.

 This is a 6"x6" card.  I used the Memory Box "Grand Merry Christmas" for the sentiment.  I love how this die cuts out the card stock around the "merry" and die cuts out the "Christmas" letters; it is such a cool effect!  You can save the "Christmas" letters to use at another time.  The piece of white card stock is 5" x 6" (to leave a border.  After die cutting the  "Merry Christmas", I placed the Sizzix, Brenda Walton Textured Trellis embossing folder on the portion under the die cut and ran it through my Big Shot.  I attached a piece of 6"x6" pink glitter paper to the 6"x6" card base, and then attached the sentiment piece over it.  To cover up the edge of the embossing, right under the die cut sentiment, I added a piece of the glitter paper.  Because the white piece was smaller than the card, it left a pretty glitter border along the bottom.

I love to work with the Impression Obsession, die cut Pine Branch because it is so realistic.  Below I have instructions on how I made it look even more realistic.

 Pine Branch Tutorial

 In this picture you can see the pine branch when just die cut.  I decided to use Tim Holtz, Distress "Pine Needle, embossing powder to give it texture.  The branch on the right has been embossed.

Hopefully you can see the difference in the plain branch on top and the embossed branch on the bottom.  The Pine Needles embossing powder is pretty dark and looks great with red or dark colored poinsettias.  I wanted to tone it down a little to be softer with the pink poinsettias.

In this picture, the first branch was just die cut.  On the second branch I used "Peeled Paint" Distress embossing powder. The bottle of embossing powder matching the embossed branch is above the branch so you can see the difference in color.  You need to cover the branch well with VersaMark Ink then cover with the embossing powder.  This Peel Paint branch is not exactly the color is wanted, so I decided to see what a combination of the two embossing powders would look like. On the third, from the left,  is a branch embossed with the "Pine Needles" embossing powder. On the branch on the far right, I pressed the branch down in the VersaMark Ink pad making sure ink was covering all the "needles" then sprinkled on a little of the "Pine Needles" embossing powder, shaking off the excess and putting it back in the bottle.  Next I poured over a good coat of the "Peeled Paint" embossing powder, pressing it in, then heat set it with the heat gun.  The shade of green came out in between the other two colors.  It looks perfect with the pink poinsettia.   I love the texture the embossing powder gave the pine branches  -- because of the texture, the branch looks almost real!  I hope you will give this a try because I am sure you will love how it helps to make the pine branch more realistic.
